The Comsewogue School District Athletics Department held its annual Varsity Senior Awards Night on Monday, June 16, 2025. Students and their families were invited to celebrate their athletic accomplishments during their time as a Comsewogue High School varsity student-athlete. Students from each varsity team in the fall, winter and spring seasons were acknowledged by their coach. Each coach had the opportunity to present their own awards to a senior who had an exceptional season.
During the awards night, there are additional special awards that are presented to student-athletes which are voted on by all of the varsity coaches who exemplify certain qualities and traits. A male and female student-athlete is chosen for each of the following categories: Most Outstanding Athlete, Most Improved Athlete and Scholar Athlete. This years’ recipients of the Most Outstanding Athlete award were Joseph Perri and Sophia Deja. Ryan Schnepf and Natalia Pashkin were named the Most Improved Athletes, and Melissa Romano and Doug Annicelli were recognized as the top Scholar Athletes.
This school year, for the first time, Comsewogue Athletics recognized students with the “Record Breaker” award. This award is given to any senior student-athlete who broke a school record in their respective sport during the 2024-2025 season. For the fall season, Peter Castaldo broke two records in Football with the most rushing yards in a game (324) and the most rushing touchdowns in a game (5).
During the winter season, Thomas Autino broke the Varsity WInter Track school record in the 1,000 meter run with a time of 2:38.47. Anthony Soares set a new record in the Triple Jump with a distance of 43 feet, 2.75 inches. Thomas and Anthony were both part of the 4x800 meter relay team that set a school record with an outstanding time of 8:44.00. Mason Mangialino now holds the school record for most Wrestling wins in a career (186) and wins in a single season (42). Ethan Placencia-Nazareno set two records in Boys Swimming. He swam the 100 meter freestyle in 47.17 seconds and the 200 meter freestyle in 1 minute, 40.34 seconds.
The spring season continued to bring more new school records. Thomas Autino continued to impress on the track, setting new school records in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:55.18 and the 1,600 meter run with an incredible time of 4:20.86. Thomas, along with Anthony Soares, set the record for the Spring Track team in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 8:08.60. On the Girls Varsity Track and Field team, Madelyn Serxner broke one minute in the 400 meter dash, earning a school record with a time of 57.68 seconds. On the diamond, Joseph Perri now holds the Comsewogue record for the highest batting average in a baseball season, hitting .550.
Eleven seniors were recipients of the Section XI Gold Key Award. This award is presented to graduating seniors who played a varsity sport in at least eight of the nine seasons beginning in their sophomore year. Kiera Andresen, Daniel Bruno, Matthew Cross, Sophia Deja, Carlos Dilone, Kaitlyn Gelpi, Marisol Gelpi, Nichola Rappa, Madelyn Serxner, Anthony Soares and Donavan Waithe were the 2024-2025 recipients.
At the end of the ceremony, recipients of other Athletics awards from throughout the school year were acknowledged. Abigail Hughes and Tyler Strohm were named Comsewogue’s Suffolk Zone Health/Physical Education Award recipients for this school year. Mason Mangialino and Sophia Deja were both nominated for the Dellecave Award, and Doug Annicelli was recognized for being Comsewogue’s NYSPHSAA Student Athlete Advisory Committee Representative for Section XI for the past two school years.
