Comsewogue Students Earn Eagle Scout Rank

Posted Date: 8/20/25 (6:17 PM)

The Comsewogue School District is proud to announce that ten Comsewogue High School students have achieved the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. Spencer Aron, James Garafola, and Michael Zervakos of Scouting America Troop 454, under the leadership of Chris Trubia; and Kenny Arroyo, Quintin Bonpietro, Danny Cappiello, João Ferreira, Hamilton Granger, Ethan Matz and Massimo Olson of Scouting America Troop 354, under the leadership of Bob Pearsall, were honored at several courts of honor over the last few months.

Each Eagle Scout has demonstrated exceptional dedication, earning at least 21 merit badges, undergoing a thorough review process and completing a significant community service project to showcase their leadership and initiative.

“We are incredibly proud of these young men for reaching this important milestone,” said Comsewogue High School Principal Dr. Michael Mosca. “Becoming an Eagle Scout is no small feat - it’s a reflection of their hard work, character, and perseverance.”

The ten Scouts earned the prestigious designation after completing unique community service projects to help members of their community. For his Eagle Scout service project, Spencer Aron constructed and painted a monumental Adirondack chair to adorn the Port Jeff Station/Terryville Chamber of Commerce Train Car.

James Garafola’s service building a book share site with a bench at Clinton Ave Elementary School, creating a wonderful outdoor space for students to read, and share books.

For his Eagle Scout service project Michael Zervakos involved creating a food collection pantry at the Three Village Church in Setauket. This project helped the church create a place to organize and store the food collected for their pantry.

Kenny Arroyo constructed a recreational seating area to benefit the members of VFW Post 4927 in Port Jefferson Station, providing the post with a relaxing outdoor seating area for the post members and guests to enjoy.

Quintin Bonpietro dedicated his project to the Sunshine Alternative Education and Prevention Center, where he painted concrete pavers and built outdoor gaming areas. Thanks to his commitment, students and community members at the education center enjoy checkers,
hop-scotch and tic-tac-toe outdoors.

Danny Cappiello spearheaded the development of a storage shed at the Comsewogue Community Garden to benefit the volunteers working to help feed members of the community. The new shed replaces an older shed and provides the Garden’s volunteers with a new space to store their equipment.

For his project, João Ferreira created an outdoor workspace for students and local organizations to use outside of Boyle Road Elementary School, providing a large concrete table for classes to use for outdoor lessons and activities.

Hamilton Granger assisted the First United Methodist Church in Port Jefferson by building a courtyard and screening fences to prevent headlights on the road from shining into the rectory.

Ethan Matz’s project involved transforming a Comsewogue High School classroom into a mock courtroom, creating an immersive experience for students taking classes like U.S. History, Mock Trial, Government, and Criminal Justice.

Lastly, Massimo Olson’s project was based at JFK Middle School, in which he constructed composting bins. The compost that is generated by those bins is used by the school's Greenagers club who use it to help feed Jackie’s Garden, located in the school’s courtyard, and for other ecological projects that they undertake.

All ten of the Eagle Scout projects can be seen in use throughout the community with a plaque naming the Eagle Scout who led the initiative. At the Court of Honor ceremonies, the students engaged in the Eagle Scout Charge and the presentation of the Eagle badge. The event also included heartfelt acknowledgments of the families, mentors and leaders who supported each Scout along their journey.
