Summer 2026 Facilities Enhancements

Through community support, grants and routine upkeep of our facilities, this summer brought a large scope of projects throughout each of our buildings, which will ensure that we continue to provide safe, healthy environments for our students, staff and community.

At each of our four elementary schools, the playgrounds were extensively renovated to include new, modern equipment to create a fun space for all children. Rubber surfaces or wood fiber chips were added to the base of all equipment, with walkways between all play areas constructed to meet accessibility guidelines. Additionally, a portion of the Norwood asphalt recess area and the entirety of Terryville’s basketball courts were repaved, with four new basketball hoops also added at Terryville. A walking path was also installed around the perimeter of Boyle’s playground. This project was approved in May 2025 by our community members during the annual budget vote, with a second proposition that authorized the district to spend money from the Capital Reserve Fund.

Another large project that was undertaken this summer was the complete replacement of Norwood’s hallway wall tile. Also approved by the community in May 2025, with additional funds provided in the May 2026 budget, the existing outdated and broken tiles were completely abated, removed and replaced with white tile, complemented by blue accent strips throughout the building, including all hallways and stairwells. The railings on the stairwells were replaced and now have additional ballasts to meet current safety regulations. The project concluded with all walls, door frames and railings receiving a fresh coat of paint.

At District Office, five offices on the second floor of the building had asbestos tile abatement, new paint, new ceiling tiles, and new air vents installed, along with vinyl floors, updated network wiring, and new shelving and furniture also installed in select locations. This renovation completed a multi-year project to refurbish all office spaces and remove all asbestos floor tile within the administration building.

Numerous projects were completed solely by our talented and dedicated maintenance, grounds and custodial teams. The ceiling grid and tiles in the District Office lobby and Board of Education room were removed and replaced by our maintenance and custodial staff. The parking lots at Boyle, Clinton and the high school were re-striped by the grounds department on their 2-year cycle. The wash room at JFK by the gymnasium was abated, re-sheetrocked and rewired with upgraded electrical service, along with the installation of new equipment. At Terryville, the gym was painted by the custodial team and the Boyle gym and main lobby received a fresh coat of paint. Wall padding was also replaced around the perimeter of the Boyle gymnasium.

Our maintenance team worked on replacing classroom lights at Boyle in the front hallway with new LED fixtures, replacing old and outdated fluorescent units. This is part of an ongoing effort to convert all lights in all buildings to LED fixtures, helping to reduce energy costs. The school store at Comsewogue High School, funded by a grant received from Assemblywoman Rebecca Kassay, was built in the rotunda by our maintenance team, which included the framing of a new wall, sheetrock, tape and spackle, the installation of cabinets, a TV, shelving, electrical and data lines. The school store is run by students, helping them to understand and gain experience in marketing and sales.
